What to Know About Powers of Attorney

A power of attorney is a legal document that gives someone (your “agent” or “attorney-in-fact”) the authority to act on your behalf in specific matters. Creating a Power of Attorney

In order for a power of attorney to be valid, it must meet several legal stipulations.

In New York, these include the following:

    • The document must be legibly typed or printed in an appropriate font size (12-point or greater)
    • You (the principal) must sign and date the power of attorney document when you have the mental capacity to do so
    • The document must be notarized
    • Your designated agent must also sign and date the document before a notary

At SBAGK LLP, we serve clients in New York and other areas throughout the Northeastern United States. For detailed information about your state’s power of attorney requirements, consult one of our knowledgeable lawyers.
